Since students may not be familiar with or able to interpret some details from the outline drawing (if they’ve never seen a cirque, for example, would they interpret a drawing of one as a bowl-shaped basin?), the original scene is also included as well as a possible coloring scheme. In some cases the coloring scheme is altered from the original to improve appearance or contrast. Students are, of course, free to color the scenes however they like; these figures are included as aids.

On these diagrams, pairs of parallel lines show boundaries where plates are spreading apart, lines with ticks show boundaries where plates are colliding, and simple lines show other types of boundary. These include places where plates are simply sliding past one another, places where motions are too complex to portray simply, and places where new plate boundaries may be forming.

To go along with this challenge, I have put together a printable that you can use to create your very own rock treasure box using an empty egg carton. Print out it out and then decorate it with paints, markers, glitter, or any other art materials you have on hand. Use the labels to record the names of your rocks.
