The Mermaid’s Purse Freebie: Original Story with Common Core Activities from Seaurchin on Teachers Pay Teachers
The Mermaid’s Purse
A Tale of Kindness and Ingenuity
Written and Illustrated by Sherri Stockdale
When the empty egg case of a skate washes up on the beach, it is known as a mermaid’s purse. Serena is a mermaid who finds such a “purse” and fills it with seaborne treasures. These treasures come in handy when Serena runs into friends in need; such as a jellyfish with tangled tentacles and a hermit crab whose shell has been washed out with the tide. Children will enjoy predicting how Serena will help her friends and what treasures she will use to do so. The story comes with close reading questions that are aligned with the common core for grades 2 and 3. There is also a vocabulary activity included.
