If You Give a Cat a Cupcake

Koko received If You Give a Cat a Cupcake by Laura Numeroff in a gift exchange when I was expecting Fifi. It was one of the kidlets’ favourite stories when they were little and one of the first books they read aloud when they all started reading. Here are some super cute activities to accompany the book. Wish I had found them when this book was so popular with my own children.

If You Give a Cat a Cupcake Storytime from Homemaking Fun
If You Give a Cat a Cupcake
I started out our storytime by reading my kids If You Give a Cat a Cupcake. Then I let them decorate cupcakes with frostings and toppings. For the toppings I had sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, and gumdrops. I tried to find mini M&M’s but they were sold out at the grocery store by my house. The kids both had fun decorating the cupcakes. I turned around for a minute and when I looked back I noticed that my daughter had spooned more toppings onto the plate then the cupcake. Now we have a bag of mixed toppings. πŸ™‚

Unicorn Minus One Coverall Game from Recipe for Teaching
Unicorn Resources
For this game, I had my students roll the dot cube. They used the unicorn counters to count out that many unicorns on their unicorn ten frame. Since this is a minus one game, they then took away one unicorn from the ten frame. Some of my students were able to determine one less without counting the leftover unicorn counters and some counted the leftover unicorns. I like to hold my students accountable for their math work by having them say the subtraction equation to the partner they are working with. For example, in the picture below, they rolled a 6 and took away 1. They would tell their friend, “6-1=5.” After students determined what “minus one” was, they covered that number on their game board with a unicorn eraser. Students continued this process on each partner’s turn. The goal of the game is to cover all of the numbers on the game board. After students have learned this game and are familiar with it, this game would make a great addition to a math station.

Freebie Friday ~ Dora the Explorer Resources

This post may contain affiliate links which help support my family. Thank you for stopping by.

Dora the Explorer Resources

Fifi has decided to start learning Spanish and the first thing that came to mind was Dora the Explorer. Here you can find some of the freebies I have collected.

The series centers around Dora, a seven-year-old Latina girl, with a love of embarking on quests related to an activity that she wants to partake of or a place that she wants to go to, accompanied by her talking purple backpack and anthropomorphic monkey companion named Boots (named for his beloved pair of red boots). Each episode is based around a series of cyclical events that occur along the way during Dora’s travels, along with obstacles that she and Boots are forced to overcome or puzzles that they have to solve (with “assistance” from the viewing audience) relating to riddles, the Spanish language, or counting. Common rituals may involve Dora’s encounters with Swiper, a bipedal, anthropomorphic masked thieving fox whose theft of the possessions of others must be prevented through fourth wall-breaking interaction with the viewer. To stop Swiper, Dora must say “Swiper no swiping” three times. However, on occasions where Swiper steals the belongings of other people, the viewer is presented with the challenge of helping Boots and Dora locate the stolen items.

Seahorse Art Project for Kids from The Crafty Classroom
Free Art Resources
These beautiful seahorses are adapted from an amazing torn paper collage I found at Torn Paper Paintings by Wanda Edwards. I thought it might be fun to recreate this seahorse in a way that children could color and cut with ease so I drew a template based on this seahorse and decided to color it with bleeding tissue paper instead. It’s not as stunning as Ms. Edwards torn paper art, but I think your children will be amazed at the work they can do, and this technique might inspire them to start making their own shapes from paper as well.
