IF I WERE AN ANIMAL

Have you ever wished you were an animal? I have! I would be a TIGER and would SLEEP all day. I would have SKIN the colour of MUD. I would live in a BOAT. On DARK nights, I would hide in a CAVE. During the day, I would go to the POOL and make lots of PIZZAS. When people saw me coming, they would RUN. I would eat COOKIES every day. When I was feeling LUCKY, I would SLEEP. Wouldn’t that be COOL?

I FOUND A SPACE ALIEN

One day in the middle of my BED I found a SPACE ALIEN that had GREEN LEGS and GREEN ARMS. I put it in my BAG and ran to my friend’s house. Later, we fed it TIN and DOGS, and suddenly, it GREW! I thought we would get EATEN. So I put it IN A BOX and sent it to THE ZOO. I have not seen it since, which makes me feel GOOD.

This term we have started on a new phase in Language Arts. We have started with story writing and yesterday we started with dictionary work.

These are the works Noo had to look up, I took them from the Waddington Diagnostic Spelling Test 1. His answers are indicated in orange.

Hat: a covering for the head

Web: the network of fine strands made by a spider

Jog: to run at a steady leisurely pace

Van: a covered vehicle for transporting goods or people

Clock: a device that measures the time

I started off by giving him words that are easy to find and will progressively give him more difficult words to look up as his dictionary confidence increases.

I got this wonderful book from a friend. Its a workbook for children aged between 6 and 8 years old to develop the child’s creative writing skills. Noo is thoroughly enjoying this book so far.

Here are two of the stories that Noo “wrote” this week. The words in orange are the words he had to fill in from a word list (each story has its own Word List). As he progresses through this book he will have to write the middle of the story (they give the beginning and the end), then the beginning of the story, the end of a story and then he will be given a blank page with a title and have to write the entire story.

Story 1

A STRANGE MORNING

One CLOUDY morning I woke up and found that I had been turned into a FROG. I was very GREEN. I had COLOURS all over my body. They were YELLOW and STICKY. At home, my MOM gave me a HUG and told me to eat my cereal. But I wanted a FLY instead. At school, my TEACHER was SHOCKED, and I had to sit in a BOX. They finally called a DOCTOR, and I was soon back to being myself. Everyone said, “TIME TO EAT” and I agreed with them!

Story 2

THE SECRET HIDING PLACE

One day I was RUNNING home when I saw a little RABBIT running across the sidewalk. I followed it into a HOLE. It was very DARK and SMELLY. This FOOLED me, but I did not give up. There were PICKLES growing on the ceiling, and there were lots of LAMPS on the walls. Just then, a DUCK jumped out and HUGGED me! “This is a secret hiding place for ANIMALS. Do you want to LEAVE?” it said. I said “YES,” and then I went HOME.
