A little over 3 years ago I’d heard about the meteorite that exploded over Russia in the early 1900’s and because I had never heard of it, I researched it.
What a fascinating field of study!
I’ve put together a unit study for K-12th Grade and have added it to my Teachers Pay Teachers online store. Included in the unit study are questionaires for the lower grades and higher grades, experiment and project suggestions.

Our Poppins Book Nook theme for May is Dinosaurs. My brother and his partner visited Canada in January (they are immigrating there with in the next month or so) and came back with these boxes of dinosaur “eggs” for Koko and Fifi. I put them away and totally forgot about them! I happened to stumble across them while looking for something totally unrelated to this theme, LOL.
We documented the process each morning. Unfortunately, this experiment didn’t work out as planned.
Day 1:

The dinosaurs look like they melted 🙁 I have a feeling my water may have been a touch hotter than the 35*C they recommend.
Last night Noo and Papa Steve were talking about famous scientists. Papa tasked Noo to write a paragraph on two scientists. He chose Benjamin Franklin (aka the “old dude”) and Stephen Hawking (aka the “new dude”). Very scientific, no?
Here are his paragraphs (typed exactly as they are written):
Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin had 1 son and had a son who died of small pox and a daughter. Benjamin was born in January 17 1706 and died on April 17 1790. He discovered electricity and invented the lightning rod. he developed the Franklin stove which provided more heat while using less fuel than other stoves.
Stephen Hawking
Stephen was born in January 08 1942 and he is 70 years old. He lived in a clinic when he was 17 – 21 years old. He was working on black holes. He had 2 sons and 1 daughter. He won the Albert Einstein award! He whent to Rome. He suffers from a disease called ALS.
Noo was especially excited to learn that Benjamin Franklin shares a birthday with Papa Steven and was just as excited to learn that he died on Noo’s birthday, LOL. This was the first time he had done research on something he is really interested in. Where other boys want to be firemen, policemen or doctors, he has always said he wants to be a scientist.

I bought the Milk Colours experiment from Edukits and we did the experiment last week. Noo was in awe and just loved watching the colours swirl.

Noo got this volcano kit from Edukits for his birthday (note this kit does not make lava).
We used my No Cook Play Dough Recipe to make the volcano and left it to dry overnight (it can be baked for approximately 45 minutes at 180 degrees C for faster results).
We went to visit a good homeschool friend I met online just after we decided to homeschool. She has 3 children aged 8, 6 and 4 and all our children get along so well 🙂 We took the volcano with and the kids painted it. Once it had dried, and the children had played for quite a while, we took it outside and started the experiment. The kids were dissappointed that the volcano didn’t make lava but enjoyed watching the “eruption” as the chemicals reacted. After the reaction was finished, we pulled out the vinegar and bicarbonate of soda and made our own lava which the kids adored and as a plus it was non toxic.
Here are a few pics of the “eruption”. We didn’t get pics of the “lava” as the camera’s batteries died and I forgot there were charged batteries in the bag, LOL.
