A few weeks ago I shared Koko’s story about his interest in astronomy. This week I’m sharing our Astronomy centre. This month’s Poppins Book Nook theme is “Beyond Our Planet” which is a perfect fit for Koko’s fascination of all things astronomy. We read through the book Awesome Space Fact files by Miles Kelly.

I have set up our astronomy centre on our chest freezer which is high enough for the kidlets to view, but high enough to keep out of Pixie’s reach.

I received the bulk of the items you see here from South African Astronomical Observatory for free in 2009, in celebration of the International Year of Astronomy.

I made these booklets for Koko and Fifi. You can find them here and I can’t, for the life of me, remember where I got the Solar System booklet download (if you know who the file creator is, please leave a comment below so I can give the proper credit).

WHITE FANG

This month’s Poppins Book Nook Theme is “Wild West”. We read the book White Fang by Jack London.

Jack London’s classic tale of the Half-wolf, half-dog, takes you on White Fang’s epic journey from cub to sled dog, to fighting dog. Living in harsh surroundings with brutal owners, every day is a battle for survival.

We did quite a few wild westified (is that a word?) activities. The kids thoroughly enjoyed them.

We worked on the Poppins Book Nook Wild West Lapbook by Enchanted Homeschooling Mom.

Treasure Island (Classic Starts) By Robert Louis Stevenson

Treasure Island (Classic Starts)
By Robert Louis Stevenson

For the next two months we are reading Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. I decided to do a double month of this book seeing as the themes we have for June and July are “The Great Outdoors” and “Ye Old Pirates”. There are so many different activities that can be done with this book. This month we spent 99 % of our dedicated book club time reading the book and when we were done with the theme, the kids made treasure boxes with modelling clay (Fifi) and air drying clay (Koko).

kidazzle

Koko and Fifi are monthly subscribers of the Kidazzle Kids Craft Club and they receive awesome arts and crafts kits every month. Last month they received a modelling clay kit and it was perfect for our Book Nook theme this month. How is that for timing?

 photo 20140623_134500_zpseuuy2mzz.jpg

We spent one afternoon out in the warm sun making their treasure boxes. Pixie was napping at this point and the kids could sit and work leisurely without having the little monster causing chaos.

Its a little to cold here and air drying the boxes would have taken forever. Koko’s baked perfectly while this was Fifi’s box. Modelling clay CANNOT be put in the oven. This picture was taken 5 minutes after putting it into a low oven. Her new box is still drying, I will feature it next month. *face palm*

Koko’s treasure box. He decided to leave it unpainted to make it look dirty since it was supposedly buried for a long time.

The kidlets hated this month’s book. I eventually gave up trying to force them to listen to the stories that obviously held no appeal to them.

So to keep the theme alive this month, I made a few fun lunches. Here’s one following the pig theme of the folktale “How Old Jackal got the Pigs”.

Cheese sandwich cut into a circle with a cookie cutter, circle edible wafer paper with a nose drawn on it in edible ink marker and candied eyes.

Next month’s theme is “The Great Outdoors” and we’ll be reading, Treasure Island, an adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson original.

the story of cars
Koko just LOVED this book. Its all about the history of auto mobiles. It was a fun book to read and we had so many different activities that we did throughout this month.

The kidlets spent ages playing in the garden with the boys’ cars, building roads and little towns to play in. They even made a little dam and all needed a good scrubbing when they were done. I love that even during our cooler weather, its still warm enough to have some good old messy fun.

Koko received a Cosmic Jet Robot kit for his birthday. We put it together and he had loads of fun with it. It didn’t last long once Pixie got hold of it and slobbered the balloon, LOL.

The kids really loved this book and the work we did around it.

Fun lunches:
Snail lunch (circles cut out of bread filled with grated cheese, a banana for the snails body, grated cheese for the antennae and icing pens for the eyes and mouth. I use tomato sauce to make the pattern on the bread)
 photo IMG_20140305_121531_zps940f3583.jpg

Queen of Hearts lunch (heart sandwich filled with egg salad, diamond mini muffin cup with grapes and a clock drawn on rice paper with a food marker)
 photo 20140307_114710_zps2768fb9f.jpg

Fifi and I did quite a bit of baking this month for all the tea parties we had. We had one almost every day. Fifi and Pixie loved it, Koko… Not so much, LOL. Turns out, boys aren’t crazy about tea parties. Who knew 😛

Pixie also got in the baking fun
 photo IMG_20140220_111426_zpsf7d137b1.jpg

After finishing the book, we watched the movie. The kids didn’t enjoy it as much as they enjoyed the book. I was very surprised by that.
