I was challenged by Travel Start to share my favourite childhood memories and what better memory to share than my favourite childhood adventures on my grandparents farm.
Paper Jet Challenge
Growing up in the 1980’s and 90’s we were fortunate enough to have grandparents that lived in Rural South Africa and farmed sheep. I remember my brothers and I having, almost, full reign of the farm. I remember finding old bricks at the wind pump and deciding that we were going to build a house. We spent hours and hours building this little, dilapidated house with only 4 short “walls” only about 3 bricks high. We spent the whole weekend playing in our little house den. Our imaginations ran wild with all our little adventures.

Paper Jet Challenge

Dad readying the horses for someone to ride and my Aunty Sharon ready to ride.

Having the freedom to explore the farm and watch our grandfather work with the sheep was definitely an advantage I didn’t realise my peers and other children weren’t exposed to. Something my children don’t have exposure to today. I remember feeding lambs that had been abandoned by their mothers with my grandfather. Its a memory I treasure to this day and have shared with my children on numerous occasions (probably to the point of annoyance).

The kidlets have had different experiences that we never had as children. My mother used to co-manage a game farm in the Upington area and we spent many holidays there. They have many fond memories of going on game drives, walking up to giraffe and watching them from a short distance.

One thing I would love to add to our family holiday memories is a trip to Zanzibar. What a beautiful place! There is so much to sea and what better way to make new memories than on beautiful beaches and museums.

Zanzibar: a romantic island paradise of aromatic spices, tropical beaches, and exotic African rhythms

Zanzibar is a unique paradise. Beyond the dreamy turquoise and raw coconut coastlines and delectable cinnamon-vanilla aromatics, it is a place of dazzling colour, spellbinding culture, and bewitching soul. Zanzibar is an archipelago off the coast of Tanzania and is home to an estimated population of 1.5 million. Attractions include Stone Town, Mnemba Atoll, and Kendwa Beach.
Paper Jet Challenge
Get ready to lose yourself in the sultry rhythm and shabby decadence of this tropical African paradise with cheap flights to Zanzibar. Zanzibar is home to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), which is 10-minute drive from the centre of town. The airport serves Kenya Airways, Mango Airlines and Precision Air. Popular domestic flights to Zanzibar depart from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Flight duration from Johannesburg to Zanzibar is approximately 3 hours, 35 minutes.

Product Review ~ Secure-A-Kid Harness & GIVEAWAY

This post may contain affiliate links which help support my family. Thank you for stopping by.

Secure-A-Kid Harness
As a parent, belt safety in public transport is something we are constantly faced with. We use Uber a lot (at least 4 times a week), and though you can request a vehicle with a car seat, these seats are not booster seats and my kidlets are to big for the seats they do offer. Traveling with 3 booster seats is impractical for us in this particular situation. Enter the Secure-A-Kid Harness.

A few years ago we bought Koko and Fifi each one for when they travel with friends and/or family. These have worked really well for us and are easy to store and take along when we go out for the day. We now have a 3rd harness for Pixie.
Secure-A-Kid Harness
The reason I like the harnesses so much is that all 3 kidlets can sit side by side and be safely buckled in, in any vehicle that has 3 full seat belts in the back. They are super easy to install and the kidlets can do this by themselves. We have a bag that travels with us that we store the harnesses in and because they are made of a light canvas fabric, they aren’t heavy to lug around when we are out and about.

We were sponsored a new harness for Pixie and I must say, I much prefer the new size. Its slightly smaller than the original harness and much more comfortable than the ones we have for Koko and Fifi.
Secure-A-Kid Harness
Secure A Kid harness black is a seatbelt adjuster as well as comfort harness for toddlers and children. Thereby allowing the seatbelt cover to reposition the shoulder belt for a more comfortable fit while traveling and keeps the belt away from the neck and also face.

Every motor vehicle must be fitted with SABS approved seat belts according to South Africa law. Every passenger being transported must also use the seat belts and strap themselves in.

The design, manufacture and designation of all seat belts fitted in cars in South Africa are made with adults in mind, making it unsuitable and inappropriate for children less than 12 years of age or under 1,5 meters tall. Koko is 11 and is much to short to even consider him going without a booster seat. The Secure-a-kid harness has made using public transport with all 3 kids much safer and easier.

Product Details:
* Suitable from 4 years up, once the child has outgrown the baby seat. Even adults can use it!
* Ideal for daily use in mom or dad’s car, school lift schemes, grannies cars as well as more.
* Fully portable and easy to install.
* Crash-tested overseas and has passed according to international and European ECE R444 standards.

4aKid has graciously sponsored 2 sets of 1 X Secure-A-Kid Harness with 1 x Car Back Seat Organizer with Cooler Bag for 2 lucky winners! Click below and follow all the prompts to be entered into the competition.

Winner will be announced on our Facebook page on 6 May 2018.

Good luck to all the entrants.

Poppins Book Nook main image 2014 - 2015

A few weeks ago I shared Koko’s story about his interest in astronomy. This week I’m sharing our Astronomy centre. This month’s Poppins Book Nook theme is “Beyond Our Planet” which is a perfect fit for Koko’s fascination of all things astronomy. We read through the book Awesome Space Fact files by Miles Kelly.

I have set up our astronomy centre on our chest freezer which is high enough for the kidlets to view, but high enough to keep out of Pixie’s reach.

I received the bulk of the items you see here from South African Astronomical Observatory for free in 2009, in celebration of the International Year of Astronomy.

I made these booklets for Koko and Fifi. You can find them here and I can’t, for the life of me, remember where I got the Solar System booklet download (if you know who the file creator is, please leave a comment below so I can give the proper credit).
