Each booklet in the My Letter Book series focuses on a specific letter, from Aa to Zz, making it easy for children to learn and recognise letters through various activities. The booklets are filled with colourful illustrations and engaging content that capture the attention of young minds. For instance, the My Letter Bb Book features charming images of objects that start with the letter ‘B’, such as balloons, bears, and buses, which not only makes learning enjoyable but also helps children associate letters with sounds and words.

To create a hands-on learning experience, parents can print the pages of each booklet on sturdy cardstock, laminate them for durability, and bind them together. The tactile experience of handling the booklets adds another layer of engagement for toddlers, encouraging them to explore and interact with each letter.

The My Letter Book series is perfect for home learning or classroom settings. It provides a structured yet playful way for children to develop their literacy skills at an early age. As they progress through the alphabet, they will gain confidence in their ability to recognise letters and sounds, setting a solid foundation for future reading and writing.

6 Tips for Teaching First Grade Writing from First Grade Centers and More
Grade 1 Resources
First graders LOVE to share their work! It is very time consuming, but also very motivating to students. You do not have to have every student share in front of the entire class, or do you need to share every project. You can have students share in small groups of three to four (I usually use their table group), partner share, or have a rotation schedule for students to share in front of the class. One fun strategy is “Inside/Outside Circle”-Divide the class into two groups, one group makes a circle with everyone facing out, the second group forms a circle around that group, facing in. Now you have students paired up facing each other. Give students 3 minutes to share, then have the outside circle rotate to the left, and students have a new partner to share with. Students can rotate 3-4 times.

Reading Freebies! from Michelle Oakes Fabulous in First
Grade 1 Resources
A day in my life as a first grade teacher and my day now as a reading specialist are a lot different. But the one thing that hasn’t changed is I still love to have fun. It’s a lot harder to fit in the big fun I used to, because my intervention time is limited. This has been one of the toughest changes for me. Between 8:15 and 11:00 I take a group 2 groups of kinders, a group of firsties, second graders and third graders. Talk about craziness! We have lots to cover during our group time as well. I try to review their sight words, phonics, we do guided reading, and comprehension. So I’ve created a bunch of activities that we’ll be using this week with some of my groups. I thought I’d share them with you.

Some of these would work with your kindergartners but some would be a little advanced. You know best what your child can and can’t do. This is more aimed at First Graders. I do have a first grader this year (pray for me) and I wanted to make something for her to work on while I’m helping her brother and sister.

Sight Words Fun in First Grade FREEBIE (B&W and Color) from Ready to Teach Bilinguals on Teachers Pay Teachers
Grade 1 Resources
Sight words are important in the process of children’s learning . Words need to be read and written so I try to make these worksheets to practice sight words in the class or at home.

You are able to choose a sight word of the day and deliver the printable sheets for every class or you can deliver different sheets so that students can have different sight word sheets. For the last alternative, I decided to make a single record sheet so that you can record the students with their corresponding sight word sheets(only for big sets).

4 simple tasks are involved in every sight word sheet. First of all, after writing names, students have to read the sight word. At the second activity, they have to handwrite the word. Then, the kids have to write the first and the last letter of it and finally, they have to color the word by codes.

These sheets come in both black and white and colored versions.

Sight words fun is an effective way of teaching Language in the class and a great motivational resource for the children to have fun and learn new words.

Update

I’ve been absent on my blog for almost 4 months. The start of the year has been trying to say the least. We were broken into and they took our mobile devices (both tablets and my phone), then the whole family came down with a nasty bout of the flu and we were all in various states of healing and then to crown it all, the car (our only car) went in for repairs which took a week!

On the bright side, Fifi turned 5! All the photos of her actual birthday were on my phone and tablet *sob*, but we did manage to take photos of her birthday celebration with family the next day.

The birthday girl ♥

The kids have made TONS of new friends this year already. We have been attending a lot more of the homeschool social and educational outings and the kids have made a few lasting friendships 🙂 During the course of meeting a ton of new people, we have decided to research a new primary school curriculum for the children. The current curriculum is just not working for us any longer and Koko is incredibly bored with it. Fifi will use the Grade R (kindergarten) curriclum that Koko used and then she will go onto using the curriculum we decide on for Koko. We will, most probably do the same for Pixie in the ensuing years.

Curricula we are looking at are:
English: Learning Language Arts Through Literature(LLATL)
Maths: Math-U-See
History/Geography: Story of Our World
Art: Artistic Pursuit
Science: I’m not 100 % sure what we are going to do for Science yet. I have MANY resource books we will be working through.

Fifi is FLYING through her work for the year. I just CANNOT keep up. I have decided, with support from Papa, that she will be starting reading lessons with Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, by Siegfried Engelmann, Phyllis Haddox, Elaine Bruner, also available in South Africa on Kalahari.com. We will be continuing with the Letter of the Week curriculum and once she has completed that, she will start Grade R! I have tried to have Fifi do two letters in one week, but it was a disaster and we now complete only 1 letter per week with supplementation to keep her occupied.

Pixie is growing like a weed! She now has a new Totschool area. She has her own desk and I have made her a little Tot tray shelf out of a shoe stand, that can be put out of reach (very important, in my opinion), with all her trays for the week. She LOVES animals and dinosaurs, so most of her trays have something related to that.

Planning: 2013/2014 Planning and Preparation File

2013/2014 Planning and Prep File

This year I started the new school year all prepared and ready for the year. I think for the first time ever I’m really prepared for everything that needs to be done this coming year.

I decided to take a Flip File and make a planning binder to keep all my thing together. I usually put everything into our curriculum box and end up searching every time I need to do my admin.

My Manual, Daily Activity Record, Administration Guide and the new Planning and Preparation File are kept in this plastic file box next to the bookshelf by my desk. My check lists get updated at the end of every week. Its working really well for me so far and I’m feeling so much more organised and less stressed than I have since we started homeschooling 5 years ago.

This is what’s in the Planning and Preparation File
